Watching "Tangerines" - 1st EPAL
SEPTEMBER 2021
Within the framework of the European programme Erasmus+ ΚΑ229 with code 2019-1-PL01-KA229-064975_2 and the tittle «War in Films», the award-winning Estonian anti-war film ‘Tangerines’ was presented to students of our school.
A film is an ode to solidarity and humanity. Simple and unpretentious, full of images and multiple messages.
In conditions of war, through intense conflicts, the most beautiful human emotions emerge - reconciliation, forgiveness and inner peace.
This film was the opportunity to learn a little about the history and the people of Estonia, which is one of the countries that we cooperate with in European programmes.

1st EPAL - working on the script
MAY 2021
Every time the school returns to normal operation, the teachers and students of the 1st EPAL of Karditsa who participate in the European Programmes implemented by our school, try for the progress of these programmes so that there is a corresponding development.
One of these programmes is the European programme "War in Films" with code 2019-1-PL01-KA229-064975_2. The obligation of each participating country is to create a short film based on the book "The Violinist". In the previous meeting, the roles were distributed to the students and the shooting of the film has begun.
An experience unprecedented for all of us, but equally interesting and exciting.
From the Greek project team health and strength to all.

Michael Morpurgo "War Plays"
As decided during the LTTA in Poland, the story for the final product of the project will be a film based on "The Mozart Question" by M. Morpurgo.
Due to the COVID-19 virus, the schools were closed in March. To carry on with the work to be ready for the LTTA in Greece, the parts of the play were divided between schools so that the students could get acquainted with the play and its historical background could be discussed to be ready for rehearsing acting in Karditsa in September.

Project activity - war film watching: The Days of Honour
Lockdown made the project slow down but not stop. Polish students were encouraged to watch a wartime Polish series called "The days of Honour", one of the most recognisable historical Polish series consisting of 8 seasons. They were also asked to prepare a hand-written (enough screen work!) review. We recommend the series to you, if you feel like watching good, old -school stories about fearless, handsome soldiers who always beat the German and Soviet enemy.

Home schooling in Tamsalu during the COVID-19 lockdown - watching a film
"Daughters of the Sun"
As Covid-19 was spreading around the world we had to quarantine ourselves and continue our studies from home. It was quite difficult at first but it got easier as time went on. As the school year was coming to an end and I had less homework I came across a interesting war film “Daughters of the Sun“ and decided to watch it and recommend it to everyone as it is a really thought-provoking film.
The movie talks about the crimes committed against Yazidis in Kurdistan in 2014, when nearly 300,000 people (Yazidis) had to flee their homeland in order to not get killed or thrown into sex slavery. The French front photographer Mathilde comes to reflect the activities of the Daughters of the Sun, the female warriors of the Yazid. The members of the group are made up of women who escaped ISIS imprisonment and took up arms. The battle group is facing a risky operation as they are trying to recapture their hometown and release the hostages.
This movie really made me see war from a new perspective. War is not just something that happed far in the past but rather something that is still happening almost every day for some people. It really made me think about how we are too comfortable in our well being and technology that we often forget how easily we could actually lose it all. Most of all, I feel privileged to not have experienced war, sex slavery and other horrible things related to those.
(The students were working on the project theme during the time the school was closed and students were homeschooled attending online lessons. This is one of the student's reaction and thoughts after watching a film.)

Watching a film in 1st EPAL
As one of the activities of the Erasmus+ project "War in Films", the film ‘Forrest Gump’ was presented to our students.
A great movie, with many messages to convey: social, political, anti-racist, anti-war. The focus of the discussion, which followed, was the consequences of war on people – the loss of human lives, the psychological impact on those who fought and survived and how life can continue after such a dramatic experience.

Watching the selected Film for the 2nd LTTA
The film that was presented to our students in 1st EPAL was CAPTAIN CORELLI'S MANDOLIN and they were asked to fill in a questionnaire designed for this purpose. Their dedication to watching the film was clearly seen and their criticism and analysis was meaningful.
Watching and working on the film "The Little Comrade" before LTTA 2
The students of Tamsalu Gymnasium watched an autobiographical film about life in Estonia after WWII. The movie is based on the autobiographical novel written by the renowned Estonian writer, Leelo Tungal, and tells the story of the six-year-old Leelo, whose mother was sent to a Soviet prison camp. Haunted by her mother’s last words telling her to be a good kid, Leelo vows to be on her best behaviour in the confusing grown-up world in the hope that it will bring her mother back.
“The Little Comrade” is not just a film about the painful Soviet occupation and the cruel deportations ordered by Joseph Stalin that brutally broke many lives apart, but is also a tale about the preciousness of family, a haven where people help each other without judging. It is a story about loyalty to principles and feelings.

Between 8 and 28 January 2020 in Sint-Romboutscollege
In preparation for the LLTA in Poland the students decided our film would be Dunkirk. All together we watched the movie at school with some healthy snacks. The week after the students and teachers did a movie analysis and discussion. They also prepared their presentation of the movie and about our school and country. The last meeting was to prepare to play a scene of the movie.
Summarizing the questionnaire results of the selected Film for the 2nd LTTA
After watching 'CAPTAIN CORELLI'S MANDOLIN', the students were asked to answer a questionnaire (http://bit.ly/36KiSdF) designed for this purpose. The results of can be summarized as follows:
- The mandolin acts as a symbol. Music unites people. Italians love prosperity, good food, good wine but music and song more. The Italian occupation of the island of Kafalonia is calmer. The German occupation is a disaster!
- The film sends messages of optimism. In the throes of war an 'unmatched' love is born. She Greek and he is Italian. War does not stop the life! Despite adverse conditions, their love withstands and finally wins.
- Many human values go through the film, such as the cohesion of the Greek family, solidarity, love, self-sacrifice, the power of man in multiple difficulties. The Kephalonians appeared strong. Despite repeated strokes of war and earthquake later in 1953, they rebuilt their island and prospered.
